जलीयक (हाइड्रोज़ोआ) वर्ग के बाह्म स्तर में जननकोशिकाएँ भी पाई जाती हैं, किंतु छत्रिक वर्ग (स्काइफोज़ोआ) तथा पुष्पजीव वर्ग (एँथोज़ोआ) में ये अंतस्तर में होती हैं।

संक्षेप में, प्रतिरूपण का यह रूप प्रजनन की एक अलैंगिक विधि है, जिसमें निषेचन या अंतःजननकोश संपर्क (Intergamete contact) नहीं होता. अलैंगिक प्रजनन प्राकृतिक रूप से अनेक प्रजातियों में पाई जाने वाली विधि है, जिनमें अधिकांश वनस्पतियां (वानस्पतिक प्रजनन देखें) और कुछ कीट शामिल हैं।
