लोहार का अर्थ होता है लोहे का व्यापारी और दग्‍गा का अर्थ होता है केन्द्र।

प्रारंभ में इस प्रदेश में लोहे का ही कार्य अधिक होता था, परंतु अब यहाँ ताँबा, सीसा, जस्ता, ऐल्यूमीनियम तथा पीतल आदि की भी वस्तुएँ बनने लगी हैं।

यह क्रिया भी लोहे का यज्ञ है।

लेकिन ऋग्वेद में लोहे का उल्लेख नहीं है।

शहर के अन्दर आने-जाने के लिये यहाँ पर दिल्ली के पुराने यमुना पुल की तरह लोहे का पुल आज भी बना हुआ है अन्तर इतना है कि दिल्ली के पुल से रेल व मोटर गाडियाँ दोनों गुजरती हैं जबकि यहाँ के गर्रा के पुल के संकरे होने से केवल छोटे वाहन ही जा पाते हैं।

इस भवन में ७०० मिलियन ईंटें अओर ३.५ मिलियन घन फीट (८५००० घन मीटर) पत्थर लगा है, जिसके साथ लोहे का न्यूनतम प्रयोग हुआ है।

ऋग्वेदकालीन लोहार केवल लोहे का काम ही नहीं करता था, बाण भी तैयार करता था।

इस भवन की खास बात है कि इस भवन के निर्माण में लोहे का नगण्य प्रयोग हुआ है।
