1. फोकस करना - दूरबीन के नेत्रिका लेंस को ऐसे घुमाते हैं कि तंतुपट के क्रूस तंतु स्पष्ट दिखाई देने लगें।

ये ऊध्र्वाधर किरणें तल प्रिज़्म द्वारा पुन: क्षैतिज किरणों में परिवर्तित होकर जाती है और प्रेक्षक नेत्रिका के द्वारा समुद्र तल पर स्थित वस्तुओं के बिंब को देखता है।

फोकस तब सही माना जाता है जब नेत्रिका के पास आँख धीरे-धीरे ऊपर नीचे करने से प्रतिबिंब तंतुओं से हटता न दिखाई दे।
