पद्य काव्य के महाकाव्य और खंडकाव्य दो भेद कहे जा चुके हैं।

1- महाकाव्य इसमें किसी ऐतिहासिक या पौराणिक महापुरुष की संपूर्ण जीवन कथा का आद्योपांत वर्णन होता है।

महाकाव्य में संध्या, सूर्य, चंद्र, रात्रि, प्रभात, मृगया, पर्वत, वन, ऋतु, सागर, संयोग, विप्रलम्भ, मुनि, पुर, यज्ञ, रणप्रयाण, विवाह आदि का यथास्थान सन्निवेश होना चाहिए।

प्रबंध काव्य के दो भेद होते हैं - महाकाव्य एवं खण्डकाव्य।
