वमन का प्रयोग तभी करना चाहिए जब रोगी चिकित्सक को सहयोग देने की स्थिति में हो, उसके शरीर में अतिरिक्त विष हो और आमाशय नलिकाओं का अभाव हो, या रोगी आमाशय नलिकाओं का उपयोग कर सकने की स्थिति में न हो।

आर्सेनिक खाने पर सिरपीड़ा, चक्कर तथा वमन आदि लक्षण उत्पन्न होते हैं।

तीव्र अम्ल, क्षार या अन्य संक्षारक पदार्थ द्वारा विषाक्तता होने पर आमाशय नलिकाओं (stomach tubes), या वमनकारियों, का उपयोग नहीं करना चाहिए।
