वास्तव में मंत्र या ऋचा का संबंध वेद से है परंतु उपनिषदों की हमत्ता दर्शाने के लिए इन संज्ञाओं का उपयोग यहाँ भी कतिपय विद्वानों द्वारा किया जाता है।

अफ़गानिस्तान के बाद सिन्धु नदी के इस पार हिन्दुस्तान के पूरे इलाके को प्राचीन फ़ारसी साहित्य में भी 'हिन्द', 'हिन्दुश' के नामों से पुकारा गया है तथा यहाँ की किसी भी वस्तु, भाषा, विचार को विशेषण के रूप में 'हिन्दीक' कहा गया है जिसका मतलब है 'हिन्द का' या 'हिन्द से'।

इसे नागरी के नाम से भी जाना जाता है।

The process of cupellation is briefly as follows: - The gold alloy is fused with a quantity of lead, and a little silver if silver is already present.

Under the most favourable conditions there is a slight loss of gold and silver in the fusion, the scorification and the cupellation, both by absorption in the slag and by actual volatilization and absorption in the cupel.

If the button is too large for cupellation, or if it is hard, it may be scorified either alone or mixed with test lead before cupellation.

The scorifier is taken from the muffle in a pair of tongs and the contents poured into a mould, the lead forming a button in the bottom while the slag floats on top. When cold, the contents of the mould are taken out and the lead button hammered into the form of a cube, the slag, which is glassy and brittle, separating readily from the metal, which is then ready for cupellation.

Cupellation brings up the gold to about 900 fine.

The plus-silver is due to the fact that in assaying the base bullion by cupellation, the silver lost by volatilization and cupel-absorption is neglected.

In small works the cupellation is finished in one furnace, and the resulting low-grade silver fined in a plumbago crucible, either by overheating in the presence of air, or by the addition of silver sulphate to the melted silver, when air or sulphur trioxide and oxygen oxidize the impurities.

In large works the silver-lead alloy is removed when it contains 60-80 silver, and the cupellation of the rich bullion from several concentration furnaces is finished in a second furnace.

Thus, while cupellation still furnishes the only means for the final separation of lead and silver, it has become an auxiliary process to the two methods of concentration given.
