अंतर्राष्ट्रीय खगोलीय संघ ने अभी तक युग्मक बौने ग्रहों की कोई ठोस परिभाषा नहीं गढी है इसलिए फिलहाल आधिकारिक तौर पर शैरोन को यम का उपग्रह ही माना जाता है।

इन कोशिकाओं को युग्मक (gametes) कहते हैं।

उनके फूलों में नर गैमीट और मादा गैमीट (Gamete) होते हैं, जिनके सायुज्य से युग्मक (Zygote) बनते हैं।

ये परस्पर मिलकर युग्मक-सू (गैमिटोफाइट, Gametophyte) बनते हैं, जिनसे फिर बीजाणु और उनसे बीजाणुजनक बनते हैं।

इनमे सबसे आम को कप्लर्स मचान कहा जाता है, वे बुनियादी रूप से तीन प्रकार के हैं :राइट-एंगल कप्लर्स, पुटलॉग कप्लर्स और स्वीवेल कप्लर्स . नलियों को जोड़ने के लिए एक छोर से दूसरे छोर तक ज्वायंट पिन (स्पिगट्स भी कहा जाता है) या स्लीव कप्लर्स का या एक साथ दोनों का उपयोग किया जाता है।

एक 'भार सहने वाले जोड़' (लोड बियरिंग कनेक्शन) में नलियों को लगाने के लिए केवल राइट-एंगल कप्लर्स और स्वीवेल कप्लर्स का ही इस्तेमाल किया जा सकता है।

इसलिए कभी कभी इन्हें युग्मक (जोडा) वाले ग्रह भी कहा जाता है जो एक दूसरे के साथ साथ चलते हैं।

ख़ास तौर पर दो में से एक दर्पण, उत्पादित युग्मक (output coupler), आंशिक रूप से पारदर्शी होते हैं।

पहले उल्लिखित कप्लर्स के सम-कोण कप्लर्स लेजर्स या ट्रैन्सम्स को स्टैंडर्डस, पुटलाँग से या सिंगल कप्लर्स बोर्ड बियरिंग ट्रैन्सम्स को लेजर्स से जोड़ते हैं- नॉन-बोर्ड बियरिंग ट्रैन्सम्स को सम कोणीय कप्लर्स से लगाया जाता है।

पुटलॉग कप्लर्स के साथ ही पुटलॉग नलियां भी होती हैं, इनके सिरे चपटे होते हैं या एक ब्लेड लगा रहता है।

निषेचन में नर और मादा के मिलने से जो बनाता है उसे शुक्रितांड (Oospore), गैमीट को असम युग्मक (heterogamete) और पौधे को असमयुग्मीया या विविधपुष्पी (heterogamous) कहते हैं।

लगतार सात वर्ष तक ऋषि पंचमी के दिन व्रत रख कर आठवें वर्ष में सात सोने की मूर्तियां (श्रद्धानुसार ) बनवाकर एवम उनका पूजन कर सात गोदान तथा सात युग्मक-ब्राह्मण को भोजन करा कर सप्त ऋषियों की प्रतिमाओं का विसर्जन करना चाहिए।

ये युग्मक युग्मकधानियों (gametangia) में पैदा होते हैं।

जिन पौधों के गैमीट में नर और मादा का विभेद नहीं होता उन्हें समयुग्मक (Isogametes) कहते हैं और ऐसे पौधों को समयुग्मी (isogamous)।

दोनों प्रकार के युग्मकों के संयोजन (fusion) से युग्मज (zygote) बनता है।
