यह इस द्वीप पर जनवरी 1897में तब तक था, जब स्‍वामी विवेकानंद सितंबर 1893 में यूएसए में आयोजित धर्म संसद में भाग लने के लेकर पश्‍चिम की विजय यात्रा के बाद अपने चरण कोलंबो से आकर इस भारतीय भूमि पर रखे.।

अक्टूबर १९८२ में दिल्ली की धर्म संसद में ६ दिसम्बर की कारसेवा के निर्णय में आपने मुख्य भूमिका निभायी और स्वयं अपनी आंखों से उस ढांचे को बिखरते हुए देखा था जिसका स्वप्न वह अनेक वर्षोंश् से अपने मन में संजोए थे।

राजनीति में उनकी पहली महत्वपूर्ण उपस्थिति 1905 में रही, जब उन्होंने कलकत्ता विश्वविद्यालय के दीक्षान्त समारोह में लॉर्ड कर्जन की आपत्तिजनक टिप्पणी के विरुद्ध कलकत्ता टाउन हॉल में आयोजित सभा की अध्यक्षता की।

उनके पिता की इच्छा उन्हें बैरिस्टर या आई.सी.एस अफसर बनाने की थी, लेकिन शिवदान सिंह के अतिवादी उत्साह एवं सोच का आलम यह था कि 1937 में दीक्षान्त समारोह के अवसर पर ही बी०ए० की डिग्री फाड़ कर फेंक दी।

६ फरवरी १९३२ को उन्होने कलकत्ता विश्वविद्यालय के एक दीक्षान्त समारोह में अंग्रेज़ क्रिकेट कप्तान और बंगाली गर्वनर स्टनली जैक्शन की हत्या का प्रयास किया था।

बाद में विश्वविद्यालय के एक दीक्षान्त समारोह में शामिल होने जब पण्डित जी आए तो उन्हें वहाँ का वातावरण इतना अच्छा लगा कि वे काशी में ही बस गए।

1912 ई. में गुरुकुल कांगड़ी से शिक्षा समाप्त कर निकलने वाले स्नातकों का पहला दीक्षान्त समारोह हुआ।

१९५५ में उन्हें जापान में होने वाले विश्व धर्म संसद और विश्व शांति सम्मेलनके लिए निमंत्रित किया गया।
