अवतल दर्पण (concave mirror / कॉनकेव मिरर) -- जिस दर्पण का परावर्तक तल अन्दर की तरफ दबा हुआ होता है उसे अवतल दर्पण कहते हैं।

यह विभंग शंखाभ (conchoidal) होता है, अर्थात् सतह टूटने पर चिकनी तथा नतोदर होती हैं, या असम (uneven) हो सकती है।

चुंबक के ध्रुव नतोदर बेलनाकार आकृति में कटे रहते हैं।

इन जोड़ों को बनाने की तैयारी में खास बात यह है कि उन दोनों टक्करों की आकृति ऐसी बनाई जाए कि इने तेज गरम होने की हालत में उनपर बननेवाला स्लैग संपर्क के कारण दबते ही स्वत: बाहर की तरफ आसानी से निकल जाए, अत: दोनों सिरों का थोड़ा-थोड़ा ठाँस कर उन्हें कुछ उन्नतोदर आकृति दे दी जाती है।

नीचे का किनारा उन्नतोदर होता है और बृहद्वक्र कहा जाता है।

सरल चतुर्भुज उत्तल या अवतल होते हैं।

इसलिए अवतल सतह पानी और बाल्टी के बीच सापेक्ष गति का जाहिरा तौर पर परिणाम नहीं है।

अगर बाल्टी की कताई को बंद कर दिया जाता है तो पानी की सतह अवतल ही बनी रहती है क्योंकि यह स्पिन करती रहती है।
