सन् 2000 में दण्ड संहिता के अन्तर्गत कुल संज्ञेय अपराधों में से चोरी (2,385), लूटमार (1,497) तथा सेंधमारी (1,241) के मामले पाये गये, इसके अलावा लैंगिक उत्पीड़न के (51.9), डकैती के (32 प्रतिशत), हत्या के (28.6 प्रतिशत), बलात्कार के (24.5 प्रतिशत) मामले पाये गये।

इसके तहत पुलिस को अधिकार होता है कि वह आरोपी व्यक्ति को गिरफ्तार करे और जांच-पड़ताल करे. जबकि अपराध संज्ञेय नहीं है, तो बिना कोर्ट के इजाज़त के कार्रवाई संभव नहीं हो पाती।

एफ़आइआर संज्ञेय अपराध होने पर दर्ज की जा जाती है।

संज्ञेय अपराध के बारे में प्रथम सूचना रिपोर्ट कोई भी व्यक्ति दर्ज करवा सकता है।
