मालदीव लोक कथाओं की एक दन्तकथा के अनुसार, 12 वीं सदी AD के शुरू में सीलोन के लायन रेस का कोइमाला नामक मध्यकालीन राजकुमार उत्तर माल्होस्मादुलू प्रवाल द्वीप के रस्गेथीमु द्वीप (वस्तुतः रजा का शहर) को रवाना हुआ, वहाँ से माले गया और वहाँ एक राज्य की स्थापना की।

इसी दौरान ब्रिटिश भारत में से सीलोन (अब श्रीलंका) और बर्मा (अब म्यांमार) को भी अलग किया गया, लेकिन इसे भारत के विभाजन में नहीं शामिल किया जाता है।

इन्होंने बर्मा(म्यांमार) से लेकर सीलोन(श्रीलंका) तक सिनेमा के वितरण का साम्राज्य खड़ा किया।
