पहले पहल अपकेंद्री पंप (centrifugal pump) लगाए गए थे, जिनके द्वारा पानी सीमित ऊँचाई तक ही उठाया जा सकता था।

यह पंप पंखुड़ी चक्रयुक्त अपकेंद्रिक ही होता है और इसकी बनावट इतनी मजबूत होती है कि वह जनित्र की पूरी दाब सह सकता है।
