अफ़्रीकी झाड़ी हाथी के आमतौर पर आगे के पैर में ४ व पीछे के पैर में ३ नाखून होते हैं, जबकि अफ़्रीकी झाड़ी हाथी के (एशियाई हाथी की ही तरह) आमतौर पर आगे के पैर में ५ व पीछे के पैर में ४ नाखून होते हैं, लेकिन इन दोनों जातियों के बीच के वर्णसंकर भी काफ़ी आम हैं।
