इस क्षेत्र में शेर, तेंदुआ, हाथी, जंगली सूअर, घड़ियाल के साथ-साथ कबूतर, फ़ाख्ता, जंगली बत्तख़, तीतर, मोर, कठफोड़वा, नीलकंठ और बटेर पाए जाते हैं।

उत्तरी भाग में वर्षा के अभाव में खजूर, कँटीली झाड़ीयाँ एवं बबूल आदि मरुस्थलीय वृक्ष मिलते हैं।

विविध वन्य जीव यथा बाघ, हाथी, भैंसे सांभर, सैकड़ों तरह के जंगली सूअर एवं 20 फुट लंबा अजगर चित्तीदार हिरणों के झुंड, चीतल एवं अन्य स्तनधारी प्राणी इस पार्क की शोभा बढ़ाते हैं।

भारत के वन्यजीव, जिन्हें परंपरागत रूप से भारत की संस्कृति में सहिष्णुता के साथ देखा गया है, इन जंगलों और अन्य जगहों पर संरक्षित आवासों में निवास करते हैं।

झारखंड के कुड़माली भाषा के अनुसार झाड़ का तात्पर्य "जंगल-झाड़ी" से है, इसलिए इसे झाड़ जंगलों का प्रदेश झाड़खंड कहते है।

बड़े स्तनधारियों में मांसाहारी प्यूमा, जगुआर, ऑसेलॉट, दुर्लभ झाड़ी कुत्तों, और लोमड़ी, और शाकाहारी में पैकरीस, टैपिर्स, एंटेटर, स्‍लॉथ, ओपॉसम और आर्माडिलो शामिल हैं।

यह दलदली क्षेत्र है जहाँ साल वॄक्ष के घने जंगल हैं।

राज्य के पश्चिमोत्तर क्षेत्र में मृदा कंकरीली से लेकर उर्वर दोमट तक है, जो महीन रेत और ह्यूमस मिश्रित है, जिसके कारण कुछ क्षेत्रों में घने जंगल हैं।
