पदार्थ के गुण किसी पदार्थ को प्रतिबलित करने पर (तानने, दबाने, मोड़ने, पीटने आदि पर) यदि विकृत होने (तनने, सिकुड़ने, मुड़ने, फैलने आदि) के बजाय टूट जाय तो पदार्थ के इस गुण को भंगुरता (Brittleness) कहते हैं।

की रेंज में टेम्परिंग को कभी कभी नहीं किया जाता है, इससे टेम्परिंग के कारण उत्पन्न होने वाली भंगुरता कम करने में मदद मिलती है।
