It is one of the few shrubby Aralias hardy in Britain, coming from Manchuria, where it grows as a tall dense shrub with large trifoliate leaves and rounded heads of dull purple flowers.

Aralias prefer moist, loamy clay soil and semi shade condition.

Aralias are deciduous slow growing plants.Genus has a wide varieties of trees and shrubs.

The Aralias described are now placed under Fatsia, but we retain the older name as better known in gardens.

The most abundant species of this forest were the oaks and chestnuts, of which a dozen have been collected; laurels, Viburnum, ivy, several Aralias, Dewalquea, a Thuja and several Ferns may be added.

Both these series contain numerous plant remains, evergreen oaks, magnolias, aralias, 'c., and seams of lignite (coal), which is burnt; but in neither occur the marine beds of the United States.
