लाभ कमाने के लिए बैंक अपनी राशि का विनियोग अल्पकालीन ऋण देकर, बिलों का क्रय करके तथा उनकी कटौती करके, विनियोग पत्र तथा अन्य सिक्यूरिटियों का क्रय करके, अथवा ऋण तथा अग्रिम स्वीकार करके करते हैं।

ऋण देना और विनियोग के लिए सामान्य जनता से राशि जमा करना तथा चेकों, ड्राफ्टों तथा आदेशों द्वारा माँगने पर उस राशि का भुगतान करना बैंकिंग व्यवसाय कहलाता है और इस व्यवसाय को करनेवाली संस्था बैंक कहलाती है।
