एक है प्राचीन अथवा विगत काल की घटनाएँ और दूसरा उन घटनाओं के विषय में धारणा इतिहास शब्द (इति + ह + आस ; अस् धातु, लिट् लकार अन्य पुरुष तथा एक वचन) का तात्पर्य है "यह निश्चय था"।

सर्वलोकहितकारी राष्ट्र का जो स्वरूप कौटिल्य को अभिप्रेत है, वह ‘अर्थशास्त्र’ के निम्नलिखित वचन से स्पष्ट है-।

'देशी', 'भाखा' (भाषा), 'देशना वचन' (विद्यापति), 'हिन्दवी', 'दक्खिनी', 'रेखता', 'आर्यभाषा' (दयानन्द सरस्वती), 'हिन्दुस्तानी', 'खड़ी बोली', 'भारती' आदि हिन्दी के अन्य नाम हैं जो विभिन्न ऐतिहासिक कालखण्डों में एवं विभिन्न सन्दर्भों में प्रयुक्त हुए हैं।

(७) द्विवचन - सभी भाषाओं में एकवचन और बहुवचन होते हैं जबकि संस्कृत में द्विवचन अतिरिक्त होता है।
