उनकी शिष्य मंडली में तत्कालीन विद्वान कबीरदास, रैदास, सेननाई जैसे निर्गुणवादी संत थे तो दूसरे पक्ष में अवतारवाद के पूर्ण समर्थक अर्चावतार मानकर मूर्तिपूजा करने वाले स्वामी अनंतानंद, भावानंद, सुरसुरानंद, नरहर्यानंद जैसे वैष्णव ब्राह्मण सगुणोपासक आचार्य भक्त भी थे।



कृष्णतत्व तथा अवतारवाद पर कई स्फुट संदर्भ लिखकर जीव गोस्वामी को सुशृंखलित करने को दिया और उन्होंने षट् संदर्भ पूरा किया।

आर्य समाज में शुद्ध वैदिक परम्परा में विश्वास करते थे तथा मूर्ति पूजा, अवतारवाद, बलि, झूठे कर्मकाण्ड व अन्धविश्वासों को अस्वीकार करते थे।

यद्यपि राम की अवतारवाद की धारणा को उन्होंने स्वीकार नहीं किया, परंतु ईश्वर को व्रह्म के रूप में स्वीकार किया।

विकास की इसी प्रक्रिया में बहुदेववाद और निर्गुण ब्रह्म की स्वरूपात्मक व्याख्या से धीरे-धीरे मानस अवतारवाद या सगुण भक्ति की ओर प्रेरित हुआ।

जिस प्रकार भक्ति- आंदोलन का सगुणवादी पक्ष ब्रजी की शैली को लेकर चल रहा था, उसी प्रकार निर्गुणवादी पक्ष सधुक्कड़ी को अपने प्रचार का माध्यम बना रहा था।

अवतारवाद और पैगम्बरवाद का खंडन ।

बसव ने भक्ति का उपदेश दिया और इस भक्ति की साधना में वैदिक कर्मकांड, मूर्तिपूजा, जाति पाँति का भेदभाव, अवतारवाद, अंधश्रद्धा आदि को बाधक ठहराया।

हालांकि, यह तर्क किया जा सकता है की हमें यह नहीं पता कि पशु आनंद अनुभव कर सकते हैं या नहीं और ज्यादातर वैज्ञानिक निरपेक्ष रहना चाहते हैं और आवश्यकतानुसार सगुणवाद का उपयोग करते हैं।
