यह सेन्द्रिय पदार्थ (ऑर्गैनिक पदार्थ), ह्यूमस व मिट्टी को एकसार करके जमीन के अन्दर अन्य परतों में फैलाता है इससे जमीन पोली होती है व हवा का आवागमन बढ़ जाता है, तथा जलधारण की क्षमता भी बढ़ जाती है।

केचुँए अकेले जमीन को सुधारने एवं उत्पादकता वृद्धि में सहायक नहीं होते बल्कि इनके साथ सूक्ष्म जीवाणु, सेन्द्रित पदार्थ, ह्यूमस इनका कार्य भी महत्वपूर्ण है।
