The genoholotype, BMNH R 511, was in 1887 described by Richard Owen as the plesiotype of Galesaurus planiceps.

Ten years later, the specimen was formally described in 1999 and became the holotype for the new genus and species Achillobator giganticus.

The above differences led Burnham and team in 2000 to suggest that the holotype of Achillobator in fact, represents a paleontological chimera, and only the pedal unguals may have come from a dromaeosaurid-grade dinosaur.

The holotype is estimated to have reached a length of and weighed .

The holotype was found lacking traces of feather integument, however, there are strong evidence coming from other relatives that suggest the likely presence of plumage on Achillobator.

The holotype specimen of Argyrosaurus superbus is a huge left forelimb, MLP 77-V-29-1.

However, the other individuals recovered from the same locality are mostly juveniles that were smaller than the holotype (Currie " Azuma, 2006), in the smallest case less than a quarter of the holotype's size.

The holotype also had very large and flat manual unguals (hand claws), which played a role in its initial classification as a dromaeosaurid (as the hand claws were mistaken for foot claws) as well as its current classification as a megaraptoran.

Based on a comparison of the incomplete/damaged holotype with the incomplete/damaged holotype of Pomatrum ventralis, researchers Aldridge, et al.

Fabrosaurus was named and described by paleontologist Leonard Ginsburg in 1964 based on the holotype specimen; a partial jawbone with three teeth.

It is named in honor of Richard White Wehrle (1852–1937), a jeweler, naturalist, and collector of the holotype.

This holotype (BMNH 14553) was from the Alum Shale Formation of Lower Toarcian in Whitby, Yorkshire, England.
