साइक्लोट्रॉन के आविष्कारक के पूर्व, आवेशित कणों के त्वरण (acceleration) के लिए काकक्रॉफ्ट वाल्टन की विभवगुणक (वोल्टेज मल्टिप्लायर) मशीन, वान डे ग्राफ स्थिर विद्युत जनित्र, अनुरेख त्वरक (Linear accelerator) आदि उपकरण प्रयुक्त होते थे।
