The stanitsa of Labinskaya was founded in autumn of 1841.


The stanitsa was originally one of the fortresses that were founded along the southern border of the Russian Empire neighboring the Caucasus mountains and were protected by the Don Cossacks who eventually became the first settlers of Labinskaya.


With a population over 30,000 people, Labinskaya soon became a big trade center among the neighboring stanitsas owing to its favorable location in the river valley.


The residents were resisting the enemy—Labinsk Fighter Squadron was established in the stanitsa with Ivan Konstantinov appointed as the Commander-in-Chief.


In 1947, the stanitsa was granted town status and renamed Labinsk.


Most Cossacks who were descendants of the Danubian Sich, the Nekrasovites (Nikolskaya and Pokrovskaya stanitsas) as well as the Cossacks of the Starodubskaya stanitsa (descendants of Chernigov migrants, whose ancestors were Cossacks in the Sloboda) agreed to move to the Kuban.


Whilst the dwellers of the Novospasskaya and Petrovskaya stanitsas who were local peasants and traders that were enlisted into Cossackdom in 1832 chose to stay.


All in all 1093 families (5224 people) nearly half of the Azov Host left the Azov in 1862, and were settled in the stanitsas of the Abinsk and Adagumsk Regiments of the Kuban Cossack Host.


To this day their descendants live in the mountainous stanitsas of modern Krasnodar Krai and Adygea in Russia.


The remaining Azov region was passed to the Yekaterinoslav Governorate and afterwards to the Ukrainian SSR, where the former Petrovskaya stanitsa was renamed to Volodarske in 1924 (modern Donetsk Oblast).


The largest settlement was the Cossack town (later a stanitsa) of Taman, succeeded by the port town of Temryuk in modern times.


Since 1857, it is the stanitsa of Uryupinskaya and home of Pokrovskaya Fair, a center for trade on the southeastern side of the East European Plain.


It was founded in 1863 as the stanitsa of Apsheronskaya (Апшеронская).
