अकादेमी प्रत्येक वर्ष अपने द्वारा मान्यता प्रदत्त चौबीस भाषाओं में साहित्यिक कृतियों के लिए पुरस्कार प्रदान करती है, साथ ही इन्हीं भाषाओं में परस्पर साहित्यिक अनुवाद के लिए भी पुरस्कार प्रदान किए जाते हैं।

सोवियत संघ एवं भारत के मित्रतापूर्ण संबंधों को मजबूत बनाये रखने के उद्देश्य से परिचालित श्रेष्ठ साहित्यिक कृतियों के अतिरिक्त चित्रकला जैसे क्षेत्र में भी यह पुरस्कार प्रदान किया जाता रहा है।
