संविधान में इसका उल्लेख नहीं है लेकिन यह कार्यालय लंबे समय से स्थापित सरकारी चलन के अनुसार जो यह कहता है कि सम्राट या साम्राज्ञी के प्रतिनिधि गवर्नर जनरल ऐसे व्यक्ति को ही प्रधानमंत्री चुनते हैं जिसके पास हाउस ऑफ़ कॉमन्स के चुने हुए सांसदों का विश्वासमत हासिल होता है।

टाईम पत्रिका ने उन्हें भारतीय पार्श्वगायन की अपरिहार्य और एकछत्र साम्राज्ञी स्वीकार किया है।
