Absorption refrigeration uses the same principle as adsorption refrigeration (note that the second letter is different), that was invented by Michael Faraday in 1821, but instead of using a solid adsorber, in an absorption system, an absorber absorbs the refrigerant vapour into a liquid.

Both types use evaporative cooling: when the refrigerant evaporates (boils), it takes some heat away with it, providing the cooling effect.

The ice machines from the late 1800s to the 1930s used toxic gases such as ammonia (NH3), methyl chloride (CH3Cl), and sulfur dioxide (SO2) as refrigerants.

The now-vaporized refrigerant then goes back into the compressor to repeat the cycle.

Depending on the refrigerants used, these installations and their subsequent leaks can lead to ozone depletion (chlorinated refrigerants like CFCs and HCFCs) and/or climate change, by exerting an additional greenhouse effect (fluorinated refrigerants: CFCs, HCFCs and HFCs).

The atmospheric emissions of refrigerant gases are based on the leaks occurring in insufficiently leak-tight refrigerating installations or during maintenance-related refrigerant-handling processes.

The evaporation occurs at the lower end of a narrow tube; the bubbles of refrigerant gas push the refrigerant-depleted liquid into a higher chamber, from which it will flow by gravity to the absorption chamber.

The condensed (liquid) refrigerant will then flow by gravity to supply the evaporation phase.

Carbon dioxide has been used as a refrigerant for many years.

The condensed refrigerant, now at a temperature near to that of the external environment but at higher pressure, then passes through an orifice or a throttle valve into the evaporator section.
