एक मत के अनुसार गांधीजी को बापू सम्बोधित करने वाले प्रथम व्यक्ति उनके साबरमती आश्रम के शिष्य थे सुभाष चन्द्र बोस ने 6 जुलाई 1944 को रंगून रेडियो से गांधी जी के नाम जारी प्रसारण में उन्हें राष्ट्रपिता कहकर सम्बोधित करते हुए आज़ाद हिन्द फौज के सैनिकों के लिये उनका आशीर्वाद और शुभकामनाएँ माँगीं थीं।

2009 में प्राप्त उनके मृत्यु प्रमाण पत्र से पता चलता है कि उनकी मृत्यु 29 जनवरी 1909 को फ्लोरेंस, इटली में हुई थी, हालांकि पहले माना जाता था कि बीटो की मृत्यु रंगून या मंडालय में 1905 या 1906 के आसपास हुई थी।

यही नहीं, उन्हें बंदी बनाकर रंगून ले जाया गया, जहां उन्होंने सात नवंबर, 1862 में एक बंदी के रूप में दम तोड़ा।

१८५७ के इस प्रथम भारतीय स्वतन्त्रता संग्राम के आंदोलन को पूरी तरह दबाने के बाद अंग्रेजों ने बहादुरशाह ज़फ़र को रंगून भेज दिया तथा भारत पूरी तरह से अंग्रेजो के अधीन हो गया।

इसका पुराना नाम रंगून था।

हालांकि, भारत के ब्रिटिश शासक अपने इस युद्ध को शत्रु के देश तक ले जाने का निर्णय कर चुके थे; कोमोडोर चार्ल्स ग्रांट और मेजर-जनरल सर आर्किबाल्ड कैम्पबेल के नेतृत्व में एक सेना ने रंगून नदी में प्रवेश कर लिया था और 10 मई 1824 को रंगून शहर से दूर एक स्थान पर अपना लंगर भी डाल लिया।

रंगून दक्षिणी वर्मा के मध्यवर्ती भाग में, रंगून नदी के किनारे, मर्तबान की खाड़ी तथा इरावदी नदी के मुहाने से ३० किमी उत्तर, सागरतल से केवल २० फुट की ऊँचाई पर स्थित है।

नवम्बर 1991 में पेप्सिको ने उस समय की राजधानी रंगून में बॉटलिंग कि आंग सान सू की और नेशनल लीग ने कंपनियों से आह्वान किया था कि वह बर्मा में लोकतंत्र कायम होने के पहले व्यापार शुरू न करें।

22 अक्टूबर 1911 को वे कोलकाता से रंगून की ओर समुद्र से रवाना हुए . 31 अक्टूबर को वे पेनांग पहुँचे और सिंगापुर और जावा होते हुए 22 नवम्बर को हांगकांग पहुँचे . इन सभी स्थानों पर वे राधा स्वामी आध्यात्मिक आंदोलन का संदेश फैला रहे थे।

9 मार्च 1889 में किपलिंग ने भारत छोड़ा और रंगून, सिंगापुर, हांगकांग और जापान होते हुए सेन फ्रांसिस्को के लिए पहली यात्रा की।

इसके बाद 1942 में आज़ाद हिंद रेडियो की स्थापना हुई जो पहले जर्मनी से फिर सिंगापुर और रंगून से भारतीयों के लिये समाचार प्रसारित करता रहा।

इसी क्रम में वह उत्तर में रामपुर और लखनऊ से लेकर पूरब में कलकत्ता और रंगून, पश्चिम में बड़ौदा और मुंबई और अंततः दक्षिण में चेन्नई और कोलम्बो तक जा पहुंचा।
