""गाँधी जी द्वारा मौलिक रूप से लिखित पुस्तकें चार हैं-- हिंद स्वराज, दक्षिण अफ्रीका के सत्याग्रह का इतिहास, सत्य के प्रयोग (आत्मकथा), तथा गीता पदार्थ कोश सहित संपूर्ण गीता की टीका।

परन्तु इस आत्मकथा का अपने मौलिक रूप हिन्दी में नहीं उपलब्ध होना बहुत दुर्भाग्यपूर्ण है।

साथ ही भारतीयों में भारतीयता को अपनाने, प्राचीन संस्कृति को मौलिक रूप में स्वीकार करने, पश्चिमी प्रभाव को विशुद्ध भारतीयता यानी 'वेदों की ओर लौटो' के नारे के साथ समाप्त करने तथा सभी भारतीयों को एकताबद्ध करने के लिए प्रेरित किया।

इथोपिया में, मौलिक रूप से गे'इज लिपि में लिखा हुआ केब्रा नेगास्ट अथवा राजाओं की पुस्तक महत्त्वपूर्ण साहित्यिक ग्रंथ है।
