उनके राजा, रदामा I ने ब्रिटिश के साथ एक सम्बन्ध स्थापित किया और देश में अंग्रेजी मिशनरियों के लिए रास्ता खोल दिया, जिन्होंने पूरे द्वीप में ईसाई धर्म का प्रसार किया, और मालागासी का एक लिखित भाषा में अनुलेखन किया।

घाना के तट पर ईसाई मिशनरियों की उपस्थिति पंद्रहवीं शताब्दी में पुर्तगालियों के आगमन के लिए बताई गई है।

उन्नीसवीं सदी के दूसरे दशक में कलकत्ता के पास श्रीरामपुर के मिशनरियों ने और तीसरे दशक में राजा राममोहन राय ने साप्ताहिक, मासिक और द्वैमासिक पत्र-पत्रिकाओं का प्रकाशन प्रारम्भ किया।

मिशनरियों ने मिज़ो भाषा और औपचारिक शिक्षा के लिए रोमन लिपि को अपनाया।

स्वामी दयानन्द सरस्वती ने भी आर्य समाज के ग्रंथों की रचना राष्ट्रभाषा हिंदी में की और अंग्रेज़ मिशनरियों ने भी अपनी प्रचार पुस्तकें हिंदी गद्य में ही छपवाईं।

ईसाइयत के प्रचार-प्रसार के लिए मिशनरियों द्वारा चलायी जाने वाली शैक्षणिक गतिविधियों में भी यूरोकेंद्रीयता की पुष्टि करने का रुझान रहता है।

यद्यपि मूल रूप से अरबी लिपि में लिखा, स्वाहिली हिज्जे अब लैटिन वर्णमाला कि ईसाई मिशनरियों और औपनिवेशिक प्रशासक के द्वारा पेश किया गया था पर आधारित है।

1845 में पहली बार यहाँ ईसाई मिशनरियों के आगमन से इस क्षेत्र में एक बड़ा सांस्कृतिक परिवर्तन और उथल-पुथल शुरू हुआ।

वस्तुत: इसी कारण डॉ॰ राधाकृष्णन भारतीय संस्कृति के नैतिक मूल्यों को समझ पाने में सफल रहे, क्योंकि वे मिशनरियों द्वारा की गई आलोचनाओं के सत्य को स्वयं परखना चाहते थे।

Emperor Tewodros II of Ethiopia, then often referred to by the anglicized name Theodore, imprisoned several missionaries and two representatives of the British government in an attempt to force the British government to comply with his requests for military assistance.

The Napier Treaty, signed in 1843 between Moshoeshoe I and Adam Kok III - advised and assisted by the missionaries – Eugene Cassalis and John Philip on the one hand and the Cape governor Sir George Napier on the other hand – recognised the jurisdiction of Moshoeshoe I over his land between Orange River and Caledon River.

The treaty was immediately opposed by the Wesleyan missionaries and chiefs on the grounds that it took away some of their lands.
