सांद्रित अयस्क को कोयले से मिश्रित कर परावर्तनी (reverberatory) अथवा वात्या (blast) भट्ठी में रखकर अपचयन (reduction) करने से वंग धातु प्राप्त होती है।

खुल्ली चुल्ली भट्ठी में इस्पात उत्पादन के लिए कच्चे माल के रूप में लोहा (ठोस तथा सरल), रद्दी माल (scrap) अथवा दोनों का मिश्रण उपयोग में लाया जाता है।
