प्रेरणा के आत्म-संयम को भावनात्मक बौद्धिकता का एक उपसमूह समझनेवालों की तादाद में वृद्धि हो रही है, संतुलित परिभाषा (कई बौद्धिक परीक्षणों द्वारा मापा गया) के अनुसार एक व्यक्ति भले ही बहुत अधिक बुद्धिमान हो सकता है, फिर भी कुछ खास कार्यों में इस बौद्धिकता को समर्पित करने में वह अभिप्रेरित नहीं भी हो सकता है।
