खुले विश्वविद्यालय ऐसे लचीले पाठ्यक्रम विकल्प देते हैं, जिन्हें वे प्रवेशार्थी ले सकते हैं जिनके पास कोई औपचारिक योग्यता नहीं है किंतु अपेक्षित आयु (प्रथम डिग्री पाठ्यक्रमों के लिए 18 वर्ष) के हो चुके हैं और लिखित प्रवेश परीक्षा भी उत्तीर्ण कर चुके हैं।

कुछ यूरोपीय देशों में, मजिस्टर प्रथम डिग्री होती है और उसे आधुनिक (मानकीकृत) स्नातकोत्तर डिग्री के समतुल्य माना जा सकता है (जैसे, जर्मन विश्वविद्यालय डिप्लोम/मजिस्टर, या समान 5 वर्षीय डिप्लोमा जिसे ग्रीक, स्पेनिश, पोलिश में विविध विषयों में और अन्य विश्वविद्यालयों और पौलिटेक्निकल में प्रदान किया जाता है।
