वराहमिहिर के बृहत्संहिता, सोमदेव के कथासरित्सागर, गुणाढ्य की पैशाची 'बृहत्कथा' आदि ग्रंथों में भी कर्नाट शब्द का बराबर उल्लेख मिलता है।

चूलिका पैशाची के लक्षण यहाँ चार सूत्रों में ये बतलाए गए हैं कि उसमें तीसरे और चौथे वर्णो के स्थान पर प्रथम और द्वितीय का आदेश होता है, र् का ल् विकल्प से होता है, कुछ आचार्यो के मत से आदिवर्ण की ध्वनि में परिवर्तन नहीं होता, शेष बातें पैशाची के समान जाननी चाहिए।

""सिन्धी भाषा सिन्ध प्रदेश की आधुनिक भारतीय-आर्य भाषा है जिसका सम्बन्ध पैशाची नाम की प्राकृत और व्राचड नाम की अपभ्रंश से जोड़ा जाता है।

ये प्रवृत्तियाँ उस भाषा को पैशाची प्राकृत का पूर्व रूप इंगित करती हैं।

इनमें पैशाची का विशेषता शब्द के मध्य में तृतीय चतुर्थ वर्णो के स्थान पर प्रथम तथा द्वितीय का आदेश, ण के स्थान पर न्, ज्ं, न्य के स्थान पर ंञ तथा त्वा के स्थान पर तूण बतलाई गई है और मागधी की ष्, स्, के स्थान पर क्ष ज् के स्थान पर य्, क्ष के स्थान पर एक अहं के स्थान पर हके, हगे व अहके, तथा अकारांत कर्ता कारक एकवचन के अंत में ए कही गई हैं।

आगे के 10वें और 12वें परिच्छेदों में क्रमश: पैशाची का 14 सूत्रों में तथा मागधी का 17 सूत्रों में निरूपण किया गया है।

तीनों सकारों के स्थान पर स्, कर्ताकारक एकवचन की विभक्ति ओ, पैशाची को शौरसेनी से मिलाती है।

मूलत: प्रदेशभेद से ही वर्णोच्चारण, व्याकरण तथा शैली की दृष्टि से प्राकृत के अनेक भेद थे, जिनमें से प्रधान थे - पूर्व देश की मागधी एवं अर्ध मागधी प्राकृत, पश्चिमोत्तर प्रदेश की पैशाची प्राकृत तथा मध्यप्रदेश की शौरसेनी प्राकृत।

मध्ययुगीन भाषाएँ हैं - मागधी, अर्धमागधी, शौरसेनी, पैशाची भाषा, महाराष्ट्री और अपभ्रंश।

पहले चरण में प्राकृत, अपभ्रंश, पैशाची, शौरसेनी, मागधी और महाराष्ट्री का उपयोग हुआ।

इसके चार परिच्छेद हैं, जिनमें से लगभग साढ़े तीन परिच्छेदों में प्राकृत का सुव्यवस्थित विवरण दिया गया है और शेष लगभग 200 सूत्रों में क्रमश: शौरसेनी, मागधी, पैशाची, चूलिका पैशाची और अपभ्रंश भाषाओं के विशेष लक्षण बतलाए हैं।

इस प्रकार यह भाषा वैयाकरणों की पैशाची प्राकृत का पूर्वरूप कही जा सकती है।

उन्नीसवी सदी के प्रसिद्ध भाषावैज्ञानिक डॉ॰ ग्रियर्सन का मानना था के पाशाई का नाम प्राचीन भारत के पश्चिमोत्तर प्रदेश में बोले जानी वाली पैशाची भाषा के नाम का ही ज़रा सा बदला हुआ रूप है।
