जब कभी वज्रकीट (पैंगोलिन) पर किसी प्रकार का आक्रमण होता है तो वह अपने शरीर को लपेटकर गेंद के आकार का हो जाता है और शरीर पर लगे, एक के ऊपर एक चढ़े शल्कों के कोर आक्रमण से रक्षा करने तथा स्वयं प्रहार करने के काम आते हैं।

पैंगोलिन को वज्रदेही या शल्कीय कीट भक्षक कहा जाता है।

किसी शत्रु के आक्रमण करने पर पैंगोलिन अपने शरीर को मोड़कर गेंद का रूप दे देता है।

पैंगोलिन की जिह्वा चींटीख़ोरों की तरह होती है और इस से वह चींटी व दीमक खाने में सक्षम होता है, और यही उसका मुख्य आहार है।

इनके निवास वाले वन शीघ्रता से काटे जा रहे हैं और अंधविश्वासी प्रथाओं के कारण इनका अक्सर शिकार भी करा जाता है, जिसकी वजह से पैंगोलिन की सभी जातिया अब संकटग्रस्त मानी जाती हैं और उन सब पर विलुप्ति का ख़तरा मंडरा रहा है।
