रविवर्मा पाश्चात्य चित्रकला तथा तैल चित्र निर्माण से तभी परिचित हो पाये जब सन् 1868 में तिरुवनन्तपुरम में थियडोर जेनसन नामक डच चित्रकार से उनकी मुलाकात हुई।

इसके बाद उन्होंने ब्रिटिश चित्रकार चार्ल्स पाल्मर के स्टूडियो में लगभग 3 से 4 साल तक काम करके तैल चित्र और छायाचित्र में निपुणता हासिल की।

चौदह वर्ष की आयु में वे उन्हें तिरुवनंतपुरम ले गये जहाँ राजमहल में उनकी तैल चित्रण की शिक्षा हुई।

इसी दौरान उन्होंने कई प्रतिष्ठित व्यक्तियों के तैल चित्र बनाये और ख्याति अर्जित की।

संस्थान भवन के प्रथम तल पर मुंशी प्रेमचन्द चित्र वीथिका तथा भवन के द्वितीय तल पर प्रसाद चित्र वीथिका स्थापित है, जिसमें हिन्दी साहित्य के मूर्धन्य साहित्यकारों के तैल चित्र लगे हुए हैं।
