अम्लों में टार्टरिक अम्ल व मेलिक अम्ल पाया जाता है, इसके साथ ही साथ साइट्रिक अम्ल भी अल्प मात्रा में पाया जाता है।

शेले (Scheele) ने 1768 ई. में टार्टरिक अम्ल अंगूरों के टार्टर से प्राप्त किया तथा 1819 ई. में केस्टनर (Kastner) ने उसी संघटन का एक अम्ल उपजात के रूप में पाया और इसका नाम रेसिमिक (Racemic) अम्ल रखा।
