प्रसाद ने इस काव्य के प्रधान पात्र 'मनु' और कामपुत्री कामायनी 'श्रद्धा' को ऐतिहासिक व्यक्ति के रूप में माना है, साथ ही जलप्लावन की घटना को भी एक ऐतिहासिक तथ्य स्वीकार किया है।

इस प्रकार एक पूरी संस्कृति जलप्लावन में समाप्त नहीं हो जाती।

किंतु जहाँ की यह चर्चा है, वहाँ से जल विलुप्त होने के प्रमाण तो मिले हैं, जलप्लावन के नहीं।

इससे हुए जलप्लावन के बीच जो टापू बना वह द्वीप कहा जाने लगा।
