'गुलाबजी ने ग़ज़ल की आत्मा को पहचाना है और न केवल उर्दू ग़ज़लों का-सा सहज शब्द-विन्यास, बाँकपन और तेवर उनकी ग़ज़लों में मिलता है, बल्कि ग़ज़लों के अनुरूप वर्ण्य-विषय देने में तथा संप्रेषणीयता और भाव-प्रवाह उत्पन्न करने में भी वे खरे उतरे हैं।

करोड़ों लोगों को दीवाना बनाने वाले जगजीत सिंह ने मीरो-ग़ालिब से लेकर फ़ैज-फ़िराक़ तक और गुलज़ार-निदा फ़ाजली से लेकर राजेश रेड्डी और आलोक श्रीवास्तव तक हर दौर के शायर की ग़ज़लों को अपनी आवाज़ दी।

वे प्रबन्धकार हैं तो ग़ज़लकार और गीतकार भी; छन्दबद्ध काव्य में सिद्धहस्त हैं तो छन्दमुक्‍त काव्य तथा हाइकू में भी उतना ही अधिकार रखते हैं।

इनमें मुख्य धारा हिन्दी गानों के अतिरिक्त ग़ज़ल, भजन, देशभक्ति गीत, क़व्वाली तथा अन्य भाषाओं में गाए गीत शामिल हैं।

उर्दू ग़ज़ल के अतिरिक्त सीमाब की दिखाई हुई राह पर चलते हुए ज़िया ने भी क़ता, रुबाई और नज्में लिखीं जिन में सानेट और गीत भी शामिल हैं जो कि अब भारतीय साहित्य का एक अटूट अंग हैं।

किन्तु उर्दू की बहरों (छंदों) को हिन्दी भाषा में उतार लेने भर से हिन्दी ग़ज़ल नहीं बन जाती, हिन्दी की प्रतीक योजना, बिम्ब-विधान, आधारभूत दर्शन को भी इसमें गूँथना आवश्यक था।

प्रसिद्ध ग़ज़ल गायक मेहदी हसन का निधन 13 जून  2012 को हुआ।

ग़ज़ल के शेर में तुकांत शब्दों को क़ाफ़िया कहा जाता है और शेरों में दोहराए जाने वाले शब्दों को रदीफ़ कहा जाता है।
