उमराव जान (1981):- रेखा अभिनित ‘उमराव जान’(1981) आशा जी ने गज़ल गाया यथा- दिल चीज क्या है।

जन्मों की ज्वाला....(या अपर्णा की थीम गीत) को गज़ल गायक हरिहरन के साथ युगल गीत गाई।

इन गज़लों के संगीतकार खय्याम थे जिन्होने आशा जी से सफलतापूर्वक गज़लो को गाने के लिए स्वरों के उतार चढाव को समझाया।

उर्दू में प्राय: कविगण गजलों से ही कविता करना आरंभ करते हैं परंतु इन्होंने नज्म द्वारा आपनी कविता आरंभ की और फिर गज़लें भी ऐसी लिखीं जो उर्दू काव्यक्षेत्र में अपना जोड़ नहीं रखती।

इन गज़लों ने आशा जी को प्रथम राष्ट्रीय पुरस्कार दिलाया और उनकी बहुमुखी प्रतिभा साबित हुई।

फिल्म संगीत, पॉप, गज़ल, भजन, भारतीय शास्त्रीय संगीत, क्षेत्रीय गीत, कव्वाली, रवीन्द्र संगीत और नजरूल गीत इनके गीतों में सम्मिलित है।

परंतु इसकी सर्वाधिक जनप्रियता तुर्की की कविता ही के कारण हुई है और इसको उस युग के कवियों की प्रथम श्रेणी ही में स्थान नहीं दिया गया है, प्रत्युत तुर्की के गज़ल गायकों का सिरताज भी कहा गया है।

रामायण के पात्र सुधीर नारायन आगरा, भारत के एक उम्दा गज़ल गायक हैं।

अली सरदार जाफरी और फ़ैज़ अहमद फ़ैज़ के पदचिह्नों पर चलते हुए उन्होंने जियाउल हक के शासन के समय कुछ ऐसी गज़लें लिखकर मुशायरों में पढ़ीं जिनके कारण उन्हें जेल में भी रहना पड़ा।
