अष्टबाहु दुनिया का सबसे बुद्धिमान अकशेरुकी जीव माना जाता है।

सर्वेक्षण में अपनी पदावधि के दौरान उन्होंने 1926-27 में ब्रिटिश संग्रहालय में अपना अध्ययन अवकाश, पोटवार तथा कश्मीर से इकट्ठे किए गए कशेरुकी जीवाश्मों पर कार्य करते हुए व्यतीत किया।

समय मंडल ऑर्डोविशी-सिल्यूरियन विलुप्ति घटनाएँ (Ordovician–Silurian extinction events), जिन्हें ऑर्डोविशी विलुप्ति (Ordovician extinction) भी कहते हैं, आज से ४४.७ से ४४.३ करोड़ वर्ष पूर्व हुई दो घटनाओं का क्रम था जिसमें पृथ्वी के समुद्रों में रहने वाली ६०% अकशेरुकी (बिना रीढ़ की हड्डियों वाली) जातियाँ हमेशा के लिये विलुप्त हो गई।

अयुग्म (azygos) शिरा उदर से प्रारंभ होकर वक्ष में आकर, चौथे कशेरुक पर ऊर्ध्वमहाशिरा में खुल जाती हैं।

लंबी गर्दन और टांगों के कारण इसकी लंबाई १.८ से २.७५ मी॰ तक हो सकती है, तथा इसकी आँखें ज़मीनी कशेरुकी जीवों में सबसे बड़ी बतायी जाती हैं – ५० मि॰मी॰ की।

कशेरुकी प्राणियों मे मछली से लेकर मनुष्य तक कान जीववैज्ञानिक रूप से समान होता है सिर्फ उसकी संरचना गण और प्रजाति के अनुसार भिन्नता का प्रदर्शन करती है।

सालाना यह लाखों अस्थि-भंग के लिए जिम्मेदार है, जिनमें ज़्यादातर कटिपरक कशेरुकी, कूल्हे और कलाई से जुड़े हैं।

अकशेरुकी प्राणियों में से अनेक, निष्क्रिय अथवा पुटीभूत अवस्था में, शीतकाल बिताते हैं।
