कूर्मावतार : असुरराज बलि के नेतृत्व में दानवों द्वारा देवताओं को परास्त कर शासन-च्युत कर देने पर भगवान् ने देवताओं को दानवों के साथ मिलकर समुद्र मंथन करने को कहा और जब मन्थन के समय मथानी (मन्दराचल) डूबने लगा तो कूर्म (कच्छप) रूप धारणकर उसे अपनी पीठ पर स्थित कर लिया।

दोहे के मुख्य 23 प्रकार हैं:- 1.भ्रमर, 2.सुभ्रमर, 3.शरभ, 4.श्येन, 5.मण्डूक, 6.मर्कट, 7.करभ, 8.नर, 9.हंस, 10.गयंद, 11.पयोधर, 12.बल, 13.पान, 14.त्रिकल 15.कच्छप, 16.मच्छ, 17.शार्दूल, 18.अहिवर, 19.व्याल, 20.विडाल, 21.उदर, 22.श्वान, 23.सर्प।

कच्छ (कच्छप या कूर्म)।

समुद्र मंथन के समय देवता तथा असुरों की सहायता करने के लिये भगवान ने कच्छप के रूप में अवतार लिया।

यहाँ चुल्लू किए गए समुद्र में देखे गए दिव्य मत्स्य और कच्छप इन दो अदभुत पदार्थों के वर्णन विशेष से प्रत्यक्ष के समान प्रतीत होने से भाविक अलंकार है।

ये तीनों जेजाकमुक्ति के चन्देल, डाहल और चेदि (बाद में कलचुरि) और ग्वालियर के कच्छपघात विभिन्न प्रकार से जनसमाज और संस्कृति को एक खास जीवन देते हैं।
