The site narrowly escaped opencast mining, before Dinefwr Borough Council secured its future by purchasing it from British Coal.


The junction was reinstated for freight services only in 2006 as EWS requested that part of the line be reinstated to serve the opencast site at Tairgwaith Colliery.


Parts of it were originally the Gwaunclawdd Colliery tramroad, and although much of Mynydd y Drum has been stripped away by opencast mining, the entrance to the colliery survives.

With the decline of the labour-intensive deep mining, the area is now dependent on its replacement – opencast (capital intensive) mining.


The coalfield experienced a late-stage development when opencast mining was commenced on a large scale, mostly on the gently-dipping north crop.


Energybuild also operates the Nant y Mynydd opencast coal site nearby.


The latter line closed in 1991 and has since been lifted, but the former is still in use (for freight only) as far as Cwmbargoed to serve the coal washery and associated opencast mine at Ffos-Y-Fran.
