अधिकांश एडवेयर अलग अर्थ में 'विज्ञापन समर्थित सॉफ्टवेयर' होने के बजाए स्पाइवेयर होते हैं, एक अलग वजह से: उपयोगकर्ताओं पर जासूसी से हासिल जानकारी के आधार पर ही संबंधित विज्ञापन प्रदर्शित किए जाते हैं।
