वे हेवी ड्युटी व लंबे जीवन वाली (10 साल) रिचार्ज करने योग्य लीड एसिड (Pba) बैटरियों और प्राथमिक मकसद स्रोतों के रूप में 1000 से 2000 अश्वशक्ति के बिजली के मोटरों और जरूरत के मुताबिक बैटरियों को रिचार्ज करने के लिए एक नया क्लीन बर्निंग डीजल जेनरेटर (160 अश्वशक्ति) का उपयोग किया जाता है।

मूल 1994 वाला स्प्लेंडर, एक 97.2 सीसी इंजन से सुसज्जित था जिसमें 7.4 अश्वशक्ति (ब्रेक) थी।

यदि एक प्रणोदित्र के लिए पाँच डीज़ल इंजन भी एक साथ लगाए जाएँ तो वे हजार अश्वशक्ति ही प्राप्त होगी, जबकि एक आधुनिक प्रकार के बड़े जहाज को निरतर 70-80 हजार अश्वशक्ति की आवश्यकता हुआ करती है।

संपीडन के सिद्धांत पर चलनेवाले प्रशीतक यंत्रों में अथवा अश्वशक्ति की मोटर, यंत्र के क्रियाचक्र का आरंभ करने के लिये लगाई जाती है, जिसके द्वारा सल्फर डाइऑक्साइड अथवा डाक्लोरडाइफ्लोर मिथेन के जैसे गैसीय प्रशीतक-माध्यम वाष्पित्र में से संघनन कुंडलियों में प्रेरित किए जाते हैं।

यद्यपि इस दूरदर्शी का संपूर्ण भार ५३० टन है, तथापि इसका संतुलन इतनी उत्तम विधि से किया गया है कि केवल अश्वशक्ति की मोटर द्वारा इसे भली भाँति घुमाया जा सकता है।
