''जगद्विख्यात भारतवर्ष ऐसे महाप्रदेश में जहाँ जाति-पांति, रीति-नीति, मत आदि के अनेक भेद दृष्टिगोचर हो रहे हैं, भाव की एकता रहते भी भिन्न-भिन्न भाषाओं के कारण एक प्रांतवासियों के विचारों से दूसरे प्रांतवालों का उपकार नहीं होता।

मूलत: प्रदेशभेद से ही वर्णोच्चारण, व्याकरण तथा शैली की दृष्टि से प्राकृत के अनेक भेद थे, जिनमें से प्रधान थे - पूर्व देश की मागधी एवं अर्ध मागधी प्राकृत, पश्चिमोत्तर प्रदेश की पैशाची प्राकृत तथा मध्यप्रदेश की शौरसेनी प्राकृत।
