मार्च १९९१ में इराक़ के कई इलाक़ों में विद्रोह भड़के लेकिन अनबार प्रान्त में पूरी तरह सद्दाम हुसैन का साथ दिया, जिस से सद्दाम ने इसे 'श्वेत प्रान्त' (यानि 'शुद्ध' या 'साफ़' प्रान्त) का नाम दिया था।


'अनबार' नाम फ़ारसी से आया है और इसका अर्थ '(अनाज के) गोदाम या ढेर' है।
