इसकी जानकारी हमें भास्करवर्मन के दुबी और निधानपुर के ताम्रपत्र, नालंदा से प्राप्त वंशावली संबंधी मुद्राओं और बाणभट्ट और ह्वेनसांग के विवरण से मिलती है।

मातृकाग्रन्थ अनेक प्रकार के होते हैं , परन्तु उनमें ताडपत्र, भोजपत्र, ताम्रपत्र और सुवर्णपत्र आदि  प्रसिद्ध प्रकार हैं ।

उल्लॆखनीय है कि इन भट्ट पुजारियॊ के पास महाराजा सुदर्शनशाह द्वारा नागपूजा विषयक दिया गया ताम्रपत्र सुरक्छित है।

एक अन्य ताम्रपत्र संस्कृतचंद्रिका (कोल्हापुर) के खण्ड 14, संख्या 2-3 में प्रकाशित हुआ था।

तगालोग का सर्वप्रथम लिखित रूप सन् ९०० ईसवी की लगूना ताम्रपत्र अभिलेख में मिलता है जिसमें संस्कृत, मलय, जावा भाषा व पुरानी तगालोग की लिखाईयों के अंश हैं।

आचार्य शंकर का जन्म पश्चिम सुधन्वा चौहान, जो कि शंकर के समकालीन थे, उनके ताम्रपत्र अभिलेख में शंकर का जन्म युधिष्ठिराब्द २६३१ शक् (५०७ ई०पू०) तथा शिवलोक गमन युधिष्ठिराब्द २६६३ शक् (४७५ ई०पू०) सर्वमान्य है।

उल्लेखनीय है कि राजा रायसल के निधन कब कहाँ हुआ, यह इतिहास में रहस्य बना हुआ है लेकिन जहाँगीरनामा के उल्लेख, केसरी सिंह समर व कुछ ताम्रपत्रों के अध्ययन से विद्वान इतिहासकार राजा रायसल की मृत्यु वि.स.1678 में मानते है।

जीवन की अथवा प्रशासन की किसी विशिष्ट घटना को जीवित रखने के लिये वे उसे पत्थर के स्तंभों, मंदिरों और उनकी दीवारों, ताम्रपत्रों आदि पर अंकित करवा देते थे।

इस स्थान से गुप्तकालीन ताम्रपत्रों, दानपत्रों पर लिखे आठ से अधिक अभिलेख प्राप्त हुए हैं।

वह शाही परिवार का वंशज रहा हो सकता है, प्रभावती गुप्ता के पूना एवं रिद्धपुर ताम्रपत्र अभिलेखों में घटोत्कच को गुप्त वंश का प्रथम राजा बताया गया है,इसका राज्य सम्भवतः मगध के आस-पास तक ही सीमित था।

हलायुद्ध द्वारा लिखी गई किताब कविरहस्य में भी राष्ट्रकुट राजाओं को यदुवंशी सात्यकी का वंशज लिखा गया है अमोघवर्ष प्रथम द्वारा 950 में लिखित एक ताम्रपत्र में अपने आपको यदुवंशी लिखा है 914 ई० में एक ताम्रपत्र में दन्तिदुर्ग को यदुवंशी लिखा गया है 860 ई० के पूर्व हमें राष्ट्रकूट राजाओं के वंश के बारे में कुछ भी ज्ञात नहीं था।

भोजपत्र, तालपत्र, ताम्रपत्र, रेशमी वस्त्र (Scroll) आदि कागज के ही भिन्न भिन्न रूप थे।

देहरादून ज़िले के नगर साहित्य अकादमी पुरस्कार, सन् 1955 से प्रत्येक वर्ष भारतीय भाषाओं की श्रेष्ठ कृतियों को दिया जाता है, जिसमें एक ताम्रपत्र के साथ नकद राशि दी जाती है।
